Independence: Adams, the mayor of New York City speaks

The 62nd anniversary of Nigeria’s independence is being commemorated by Nigerians from all walks of life, including New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

Adams complimented Nigerians for their tenacity and unique social and cultural life in his speech at the Independence Day Carnival on Saturday night.

The mayor remembered his trip to Africa with recollections, but said that his time in Lagos State stood out.

Adams recalled his arrival in Lagos. When I first arrived on a Monday, I don’t think I slept until Sunday.

Nobody celebrates like Lagos, Nigeria. No one celebrates life quite like Nigeria. Your incredible culture and contribution to the city are right here in New York.
The young league of this organization and others, he continued, “were 100% saying we are going to be with our brother, our fellow African, so that he may become the mayor of the city of New York.”
Therefore, don’t let anyone disavow the history. I am crystal clear. even though I’m an American. I shall always be African, thus I am African.
The mayor also spoke of the suffering caused by the slave trade and said that African-Americans helped to build America into the greatest nation ever on earth.
